Hey all,
is there a system skanning thing in windos XP? the one you run to get rid of all the errors on your computer? if so where can it be? and how do I use it?

Uhm. What kind of system scan are we talking? There's one to scan the hard drive forr problems, or another to check to see if all the system files are what they should be. Those are the first 2 that come to mind. Can you illaborate a little more on what you're looking for?

AH, ok. To do this you go into my computer, select the hard drive you want to scan, then press alt enter. This should open up the properties dialogue box. Go to the tools tab, and there's a button that says check for errors, or something to that affect. IT'll most likely make you restart your machine, then after it restarts it'll scan the disk, a process that will most likely take a *long time. I'd suggest you start the process before you go to bed and let it work through the night.
Note that it should only make you restart if you're scanning your system disk (the one your operating system is on.) Other drives it'll just let you scan them without neding to restart. Hope that helps.
BTW, these instructions are for XP. IF you have another OS, let me know and I'll try to dredge up the process for whatever OS you're using from memory, or I'll look it up.

There is also a defrag thing in the control panel that tidies up the computer a bit, but I can't remember where that is.

Hi, that's on the tools tab and programs/system tools menu too.

HTH! What about the second thing you mentioned s_o_s?

I was referring to the sytsem file checker. There used to be a graphical interface for it, but I don't remember seeing it in XP, just win2k. But from the command line it's SFC. Not something I'd play with unless you know what you're doing.

thanks for your help all. I don't mess around with something unless I know what I am doing, or I have someone either here in person, or on the phone or online who know what to do. I did a disk defrag, a disk clean up, and a skan. how offten do I do the skan now?

I'd do this at least twice a month to make sure things are running good.
